Skin abrasions are a part of our life and every one of us has faced it least once. The skin abrasion is described as a minor injury or wound caused on the uppermost layer of the skin. Mild abrasions are most seen in children due to their activities like outdoor games, etc. All these wounds tend to heal on their own after 4 to 5 days or a week, depending on the severity of the wound. There are cases where these abrasions are deeper and leave scars on your skin.
Causes of Skin Abrasion -
Now before we talk about the treatment to abrasions, let’s check out what causes them and what their symptoms are-
The abrasions on the skin appear when there is a sudden contact between the exposed skin and the rough surface which causes damages to the uppermost layers of the epidermis. There are reasons why these abrasions are often seen in children rather than adults is that the children have a more physical activity like running, skating, football, etc., Moreover, the skin of the children is more delicate than that of the adults. One more reason that accounts to abrasion is the continuous scratching after you get an insect bite or an allergy that causes itchiness.
Some of the symptoms of mild abraded skin are as follows:
• Swelling and pain
• Tenderness on and around the affected area
• Burning sensation and redness on the affected area
• Itching sensation
But when the abrasions get worse, three are more severe symptoms that you might want to consult a doctor immediately when you notice them-
• Intense pains and swelling
• Excess bleeding
• Weakness in the muscles
In the case of mild abrasions, the wounds can heal on their own without any medical attention. However, you can speed us the process and prevent infection with various natural ingredients. Here are a few home remedies to get of skin abrasions and hopefully the scars too.
1. Clean the Abrasion -
The first and foremost thing to do when you encounter an abrasion is cleaning! Cleaning will help clear away all the dirt and debris that may cause an infection and ensure optimal healing.
Use: Using an antiseptic soap and cool water, wash the affected area and then gently pat it dry with a clean cloth. Apply a thick coat of petroleum jelly, antiseptic cream or any moisturizing lotion over the area to keep the skin moisturized, and then cover it with a sterile dressing or bandage. Make sure to change the dressing at least once a day.
2. Aloe Vera -
Aloe vera is an excellent remedy for skin abrasions because of its anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and skin-repairing properties. It also keeps the skin well-moisturized and promotes healing.
Use: Cut open a fresh aloe vera leaf, extract the inner gel and apply it directly on the affected skin. Allow the get to remain on the skin and reapply 2 or 3 times daily until the wound is healed.
3. Honey -
The antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties of honey are effective in treating the wounds and preventing any infection. In this way, it facilitates the quick healing of the abraded skin. It also helps in reducing the possibility of scarring.
Use: Rub some pure honey on the affected area, put a bandage over it and allow it to sit for an hour. Then, remove the bandage and rinse the area thoroughly with warm water. Do this 2 to 3 times a day.
4. Turmeric -
Turmeric is a natural remedy for minor skin problems including abrasions. The antibacterial and antiseptic properties keep the affected area free from infections and also facilitate healing. In fact, drinking a glass of turmeric milk twice a day improves the body’s ability to heal quickly.
Use: Mix ¼ teaspoon of turmeric powder with enough water to make a paste and apply this paste on the affected area. Let it dry and avoid covering it. Repeat the process 2 to 3 times a day.
5. Coconut Oil -
Coconut oil is an excellent remedy to treat abrasions because of its anti-inflammatory, moisturizing and healing properties. When the coconut oil is applied to the affected area, it forms a thin, protective layer that protected the damaged skin from dust, bacteria and viruses. It also speeds up the healing process by helping repair damaged skin tissues.
Use: Apply some extra-virgin coconut oil on the affected area and let it get absorbed. Reapply it 2 to 3 times a day until the skin looks healthy.
6. Plantain -
Plantain leaves have amazing healing properties for problems like abrasions, cuts and minor burns. They help relieve pain and itching using the anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties present in the leaves. They not only speed up the healing process but also prevent infections.
Use: Make a paste by pounding 3 to 4 fresh plantain leaves and apply it on the affected area. Allow it to dry and then rinse it off with warm water. Do this 2 to 3 times a day.
7. Indian Lilac/ Neem -
The Indian lilac, also known as neem, is an excellent remedy to treat abrasions. The antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties of the neem disinfect the affected area of the skin and protect it against infections. They also help build collagen to promote healing.
Use: This can be done in two ways-
1) Mix one tablespoon of neem leaf juice and ½ teaspoon of turmeric powder to form a paste. Apply it on the affected area and let it sit for a couple of hours, then rinse it off with warm water. Do this 2 to 3 times a day.
2) Apply neem oil diluted with carrier oil like olive oil, coconut oil or sweet almond oil on the affected skin and let it dry. Do this 2 to 3 times a day.
8. Calendula/ Marigold -
Calendula which is also known as marigold helps in healing the wounds and skin irritations. The anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and antifungal properties of calendula are useful for disinfecting the affected area and treating minor wounds. Moreover, it stimulates collagen production that helps repair damaged skin.
Use: Crush a few fresh calendula flowers to extract the juice and apply it on the wound 2 to 3 times a day for a few days until the skin looks healthy.
